Re: Leave MAF screen in or remove (95_C4_convertible)
You'll get different responses from different people.. some say to leave it as they straighten the air out flowing over the MAF... others say it remove them.
Personally on a stock to mild motor, you don't need the extra air flow yet. If you want the best of both worlds... remove just the rear screen.
LT1 style MAF's should only have one screen, the front one. I have seen flow charts that show the new MAF's not to gain much from removing the screen. I have personally done this on both my LT1 Trans Am and L98 Vette. The Trans Am's screen was removed at the track, and there was no difference in performance. The car runs very consistantly and showed no improvement. I would leave it in as it is a little bit safer for the fragile 300 dollar MAF.
The L98, dual screen MAF's supposedly show a worth while gain in flow, something like 150 CFM, when the screens are removed.
I can tell you from personal experience it is not worth it. At the same time, I didn't notice the negative difference in throttle response as some people have said they've experienced.
I saw somewhere that someone kept dyno charts of every little thing they did to the engine. I believe, if I remember right, that he only picked up 2 or 3 hp with the screen removed on his LT1 F-body.
I don't think it's worth the risk.
Re: Leave MAF screen in or remove (95_C4_convertible)
Leave it in. I have seen an LT4 dyno 308 in one pull, remove the MAF and proceeded to dyno 303 in the next pull. Had he driven it around between pulls, the computer would have simply compensated for it running a little more rich and he would still pull 308 IMO.
Re: Leave MAF screen in or remove (95_C4_convertible)
I think and did the opposite..
As long as it's a corvette, take it off. The F-body's need to leave it on because the air coming in the engine takes a 90* angle and needs to be straightened out. On our cars the air comes straigh in as it is and there is no need for it. I took mine off a while ago and never had any problems with it, and I'll bet it helps my stroker breath better :yesnod:
And FWIW, the LS1's don't have one in their MAF ... that is a hint.
