If you internally balance the engine, the flex plate and damper can be out of a 350. If not then you need to use the damper and flex plate from a 400. The balancer from a 350 is smaller.

or you can have the front of the crank neutral balanced and then use a 350 damper.

If the engine is already built, and is external balanced on the front, there are some smaller diameter external balance dampers out there. The stock 400 damper is big, and will hit the crossmember without denting the crossmember. I know Pioneer, and others out there have a damper around 6 3/8" or 6 1/4" in that range that will clear the crossmember.

All the SBC dampers will align your pulleys correctly.

Based on my experience, I highly recommend choosing the dampener and flexplate/flywheel and having the entire rotating assembly balanced. I use a Fluiddamper on my 400.

If the bottom is already built then we need to know if it is internally balanced or not. If not, then the externally balanced damper for a 400 is needed...

Hi Wayne mine is externally balanced.I know the stock diameter one I have will not fit because of the cross member. Also the factory one is "1 1/2 thick and the one in the the vette is "1 1/4 thick.

Read TPI 421 note above. They make smaller balancers, it is the weight that counts. You need to make sure the one you purchase is for a 400
