Hi I want to try my hand at doing some custom painting this spring on my 93 corvette. I plan on taking it to car shows this summer. I've worked as a painter for years just never got into the custom stuff. One of the questions deals with the fact I don't currently have a good place to paint a whole car. I bought a portable garge and plan to paint it in driveway. Now my car's overall paint is great now so I don't see any need to repaint the whole car anyway.I want to add custom panels to raised area's of hood then same on roof and top of rear deck. if I do these panels I'm going to have raised edges where the custom paint stops.Are there any ways to make these smaller? I was thinking the trick might be to build up as little paint as possible.I was thinking of not sealing it as I would normally would but put my paint directly on factory paint. After carefully sanding and cleaning. I was also thinking of lightly wetsanding edges when done[this would be possible if you used a solid color or cleared the panels afterword] and having the edges custom pinstriped after I was done. The plan is not too reclear huge sections of the car. I'm thinking that's just asking for problems with dust and bugs outside. What do you think of this or do you have any other tips on how to do it? Tip #1: Practice on something other than your car. Figure out what you're capable of accomplishing first!

Even good shops wet-sand/buff paint to remove dust. 2-step (base/clear) is still your best bet for longevity. Without good paint, it'll fade so fast your head'll swim!
