i just bought the vette with a 383 in it and have noticed the belt is rubbing on the tensioner housing up by where you put the wrench to take the tension off, the belt is super tight also, i`m just wondering if i need a bigger belt so the tensioner can work and it wont rubb the bracket? also is the tension arm usually on the bottom?
i`m thinking the wrong belt has been installed, my god its so tight i dont know how they got it on, its pulling the tensioner down instead of the tensioner pushing up on the belt, not good, i went and got a stock one for a 89 and i will try it, can you get belts alittle bigger? looks like it needs to be an inch longer so the tensioner can atleast put tension on it and get it away from rubbing on the tension bracket.
You might take a good look at the tensioner too. If it's been running like that for a while, it may have caused premature wearing of the bearing. :smash:
Check really super close that you don't have a broken bracket on the steering or alternator or air pump....they can fracture, still look more or less OK at t glance, but toss that belt all sorts of ways out of whack...
well i got my little fiasco fixed, i had to pry th old belt off thats how tight it was, i installed the new belt i got at autozone for a 89 and it works perfectly, i guess the person who put this motor together just tryed to use something he had, but it was definitelt not the right belt, this 383 only has 2000 miles on it and i would have been sad to have it get screwed up by something as simple as the wrong belt, it was going to break from wear soon i cant believe the guy got 2000 miles out of it without breaking. :cheers:
