Default Spare Tire / Run-Flat Replacement

hi. i'm considering dropping the spare tire, for help in reducing my race weight. in order for my car to be legal in its class, i believe i must have either the spare, or the factory "crash bar" that takes its place on cars with the run-flat option.

has anyone actually weighed both?

on '94-up mustang cobras, the spare is an aluminum wheel, and very light. i've never pulled the spare off my '96 LT4, so i don't know what it's made of. i'd hate to buy that crash bar from a dealer, only to find it weighed more than the spare!

thanks.

I don't have the weight of the crash bar, but do know the spare and carrier weigh about 45 lbs. The jack and handle weigh about 10 lbs. You could also remove the carrier brackets, for I guess another 1 or 2 lbs. I saw 1 crash bar on a dealer's 96, and I am familar with aluminum casting weights, based on section thickness and volume, so I guess the crash bar weighs 20 lbs. ONLY A GUESS. A Chevy dealer might be able to tell you the shipping weight?
I've already removed 240 lbs from my daily driver and I also am considering the crash bar for the future as an easy way to get more weight savings (however, will carry a patch kit) :-) FrankLT4CE

i appreciate the input, thanks.

that's quite a weight loss program you have there. how much refinement was lost? er... scratch that, way too subjective.

i am also curious how you lost that much weight?
i am sure the other readers might benefit as well knowing how to drop weight from their drivers. would you mind sharing what parts you used what brand and where you got them ect?

Substituted power sport seats with manual base seats. 240 lbs includes removal of passengers seat but leaving manual rails in place (for quick insertion of passengers seat). Also removed:
all carpeting
all insulation , except over transmission,
many interior trim panels that do not affect crash safety
storage lids behind seats
console
roll shade
top brackets and wrench
washer bottle
one horn
engine trim covers
wheel center ornaments and lug nut covers
mufflers

Still have AC, Bose stereo, speakers and antenae, spare tire and jack, door panels, IP.
Looking for light weight wheels and crash bar now. Thinking about removing AC someday possibly. I consider refinement good still since I think it should be a sports car, ie no luxury. Noise is a little more than stock. Most people would not do what I have done. Also many thiefs will probably pass on my car. The next buyer will have a great interior when I put it back together to sell. FrankLT4CE
