Hopefully someone can HELP!!! :mad. I have an 84, I have bought a new front y pipe and cat conv & mufflers. I am having problems of getting the front y, where it bolts up to the cat conv to seal properly! Without having a exhaust leak!!!!! : Same problem at rear y to conv. I have taking the exhaust sytem down three time already it the past year & 1/2!! Is there a gasket that goes in between the two flat piece of metals. Heard yes there is and no theres not!!! If u have put in gasket & it worked where did u get it? Or what did u use?? I have tried it with nothing & have used the gasket forming material in a tube, good up to 700 deg but this only last 3 - 6 months?? :U Any suggestions????
I went and bought some high temp (exhaust) gasket material from my local parts store. Mr. Gasket stuff. about 8" X 12" sheet and cut out my own. You can double it up if you need to.
This was for a Ford Truck, but it has held together very well (460 Big Block) between the exh manifold and the pipe flange. Still there and still sealed. :yesnod:
Well Im going to say no, but i did have to scrape off some metal embedded on the flange of the cat. The two surfaces must be exactly flat and clean to insure a good seal. Itr took me 3 times on my 84 but i got it with no gasket. Youre smart running a cat. I hope its a hi-flow job it does make a big difference on those cars. A hollow cat makes a LOUD car, that runs pretty sweet.
Mine leaks there too! I always check to make sure the bolts are tight (they always are), and then forget about it for awhile. It would sound better without the pitter pat of the exhaust leaks.
Also, my car is SO DAMN LOUD....you guys think it would be quieter with a cat? I was thinking of doing that or getting a resonator in its place. I was thinking I should at least put a pipe through my empty hull of a cat so sound doesn't resonate around in there. Do you think that would tone it down? Would that be a slightly flattened 3" o.d. pipe?
Your new Cat should have come WITH the gaskets. Yes you do need them, so go back to the store you bought them and say, "what’s with this?" I have found that putting the entire exhaust system together on the ground, slid the exhaust under the car (while on stands) rocking it up and placing a floor jack under the cat from the side and jacking it into place is the easiest way to get it up and no leaks.
Thanks for the in puts!!! Looks like I'm heading to the parts house looking for high heat gaskets or sheets of gasket material!! Wish me luck!! P.S. The cat conv was & IS the last thing I bought from Ecklers but had no gaskets with it! But coming from Ecklers that doesnt surprise me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :smash:
My Corvette parts book, shows no gasket at either end of the converter. When I was "forced" to gut my converter, I simply unbolted it at each end and removed from the car. To reinstall, I just reversed the proceedure. Maybe I just got lucky, but I drove off, fat, dumb, and happy, with no leaks. Making gaskets is the next logical step, and I hope it works for you. Otherwise, I have to suspect that the replacement parts are "defective" in that the flanges aren't sufficiently flat. If the gaskets fail, you might looking in to having the flanges surfaced. Good luck.
I did not have a gasket on mine, and I know the system has never been taken apart, before I did it. In fact I have a broken bolt at the rear Y pipe and am still getting a good seal with 3 bolts. It broke while I was removing the system to do the rear diff carrier bushings.
