Default body or supension not mounted properly?

i don't mean to repaet a past topic but i have had no luck finding something on this subject.

i just picked up a 90 six speed car and have installed my grand sport wheels on that i had bought for my 88. to my suprize the 335's fit flush on the passanger side but the driver side hangs out .5"-.75". upon further investigation i saw the the front tires are off roughly the same amount it's just that you do not notice it as much because the tires are still under the body. i have seen this on one other 94. i was told that gm had quality control issuses in the 90's with the c4. has anyone adressed this problem and if so how?

when i get some free time i was goning to find the center of the chassis and the center of the supension front and rear and make sure that they are in line (hoping that they are off). if they measure out okay does anyone know if you can shift the body?

any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
seth

You might have a car that was repaired poorly after a crash or like me the wheel aligment could just be horribly wrong.

I feared the first but after i got my wheels aligned (after some suspension rebuild/upgrade) they now look perfectly normal. And the car drives 1000% better too. :D

And secondly, remember that if you have original GS wheels - they will probably stick out a little even when aligned but equal amout on each side of course.

Good luck with yours!

where did you get the wheels, are they original GS or do they have the correct offset for the car.

I just checked my 90 and it is 3/8" greater on the passanger side. I just had thing on a rack so it is where it should be. Also the car is a two owner car with a clean history. I also did a quick check on a neighbors car that was outside and his is 1/8" to the passanger side. He bought his new.

You may want to check to see if the car was in a major accident. The frame or body panels could be off.

I doubt it, I am touching everywhere on mine and it is a bit smaller than the F-1.

Hey Suth.
I thought about posting this same topic about my 90. But I bought my 90 knowing it was rearended. Well. it was hard not to notice actually cause it had not been repaired. Now, when I bought it (hit in from the rear on the right side), I had to replace the two dog bones that locate the right rear spindle, cause the were bent almost in half. The floor board on the passenger side had cracked and bucked downward. There is some obvious bending to the chassis on the inside just in front of where those dogbones mount (visible with the interior of the car completely removed). And the passenger side frame rail is compressed toward the front of the car approximately 1/2 inch. Also with the carpet and seats out, I can see that where the car was riveted together just behind the shifter at the seam, the rivet broke loose and it sits about 1/4 inch off the rivet.
I detail these because you might be able to check yours from below. I have looked at a couple of rear ended cars all three on the right rear, and all three had almost identical damage to the frame and suspension. The kink is just above the right rear muffler and is not visible without the inner fenderwell removed...it is better visible with the rear of the exhaust taken down looking straight up above where the muffler sits viewed from below. Very obvious to comparee the left and right sides because there is a factory gap on both sided....the right side on mine is exactly 1/2 inch smaller on the hit side.

I bought some very nice sawblades from a very nice person on the forum and put them on and just as you describe, the left side sits outboard one inch at the top, while the right side is inboard about the same...just as an estimate.

I knew the alignment was off, so I did a backyard approach and noticed that if the camber is off, it can make a huge difference in how the wheels stick out. You might want to check yours.

Also. I have a 96 for comparison and the suspension appears to be identical, but here is what i noticed. both of my cars are auto though. If you look at the 96 (which hasn't been hit) from the bottom of the car, and draw an imaginary line from the centerline of the car body (I am assuming it is the center line) down to the ground, the line will pass over the top center differntial cover bolt. When I look at the same point on the 90, the center bolt is off about 3/4 of an inch to the left....which would account for most of the sticking out on the left side. I just cant figure out how it moved over though. I am thinking the batwing is bent, or else, the body and differential would have moved together.

I hope I didn't bore you with details. I was just throwing around posting this before I saw your post and I thought against it after doing a search...But this gave me the excuse I needed. Thanks and goodl luck. Please let me know what you find.
Also, if you find any references to the frame as far as measurements go, please advise. I can't get anyone down here to touch the frame.
So it looks like I will be chaining the front of the car to the back porch and hooking up the chains to the John Deere. Hope I can get her stopped in time when she starts to stretch before I lose the back half of the car or the porch. :jester

Good luck,
Sam
