Well I finally got my Opti spark off , removed the cap and found the rotor laying in the bottom of it! Just thinking out loud, I was wondering how may Opti's get replaced due to this prob.BTW I am going to replace the Opti with new GM. And I am going to check the rotor for torque seal (thread lock) !
Your problem has nothing to do w/opti, rotors fail on any sb. I have lost 2 in a sb and 1 in a v6.
Screws come loose or are not tightened properly.
I know my opti wasnt bad. But with ALL the post about opti's going bad around 60k-80k and people taking them to shops/dealers to get thm fixed may never have know that this is a common problem. As I trouble shot mine and found spark going to the opti but car would only diesel ,every one blamed the opti. GM must not have tightend mine or lack of thred lock.

vetteme,
I had a GM opti rotor come loose after only 150 miles. Unfortunately it broke one of the plastic dowels for the rotor pointer or I would have reused it. If I can find a good used rotor button,I will definitely reuse it if my Dynaspark ever fails.I found no evidence of any kind of thread loctite on the screws either. I personally will never install another new opti again without disassembly to first check the screws, loctite them, and reseal the cover. The 6 hours minimum labor required to replace one is just not worth the assumption that it's good out of the box especially based on the current track record for these optis.

I replaced my opti with a GM Opti and it's still running fine after 20K. I did vent my 92 style opti. BTW, when I took mine apart I found rust, water and or coolant inside. It was ready to leave on the side of the road. Yep, the coolant pump was leaking and I replaced it with an electric pump eliminating the weep hole syndrome problem.
