Default Looking for a strong midrange cam

Hey guys, I'm looking into a cam/valvetrain kit (I hope to pair these with AFR 195cc and 1.6:1 RR's). From my searches, here are a few results that have turned up:
1. My personal favorite- http://www.compperformancegroupstore...Code=LTCAMSXFI
2. http://cranecams.com/?show=browsePar...tType=camshaft

Any recommendations?

Crane Cams went out of business so you may not be able to find one...it seems a lot more radical than the one from Comp, but for everyday driving i think you'd be happier with the one from Comp...it kicks in a little sooner, will still have a bit of a lope at idle, and with 1.6's will have plenty of lift and duration to utilize the AFR 195's...

Comps 503 has great mid range and good top end without sacrificing low end power. Has a great lope with the 112.

IMO there is some info missing IOT give cam advice...

engine size
compression ratio
transsmission
gear ratio
desired power band (what do you consider mid range)

I have a 355 and love my 23X 23X on a 110 lsa (.615 lift) but I have a static compression ratio a little north of 12.1 to 1 that tames the cam a little....a great tuner worked wonders too its tame enough at low speed that my daughters occasionally drive the car to High School without issue, and it hits the 7005rpm fuel cutoff with ease in D 3rd.
(check out the 280 XFI and my durations are within a couple of degrees of that but tigher LSA and much more lift and car runs better than it did with the 280XFI)

Try the Chevy marine cam P/N 14097395. Brute low speed torque, and awsome outstanding mid range torque.......outstanding!!!!!
works on a stock engine.
But Hey, are you gonna turn it into a drag car or what?
This is the same cam they put in the HT383 hi-torque engine and the ramjet 350.

I agree not enough info was provided. My biggest question is the one in parentheses above -- what does the OP consider "mid-range". And, does everyone realize that an AFR195 -- by it's nature to flow well -- doesn't NEED as big a cam as a smaller head to perform well in "mid-range".

But, then again, WTF is mid-range to the OP? I would have said the LPE219 myself (assuming a stock 350 shortblock). AFRs don't need the extra split because of their extra nice exhaust flow. Shortening the exhaust duration of something like the 268XFI (which lands near an LPE219) gains better compression, torque, and low-mid-range performance. It's also good to about 6k rpms before power rolls off.

That, to me, is midrange. With a 222/230 cam (posted as choice #2 in the OP), mid and high range power would be better (respectively) than low-mid power. And, for a mid-high-range cam, adding some split is more appropriate. Keep in mind a 222/230 cam is going to raise peak closer to 6500 rpms though.

IMO, people overcam all day long. With newer, better heads, choosing a sufficiently small cam is even more important for a person giving any signal that the lower power band is important. The sheer mention of mid-range power is my clue.

Also, the LPE gives a lot of lift for little duration.

I am going to go with the 071 ZZ4 cam 1.6 int 1.5 exh and see how it goes.. The torque curve looks promising with a big mid rannge little given up on bottom and will sign off no doubt by 5800 but I really don't care. L98 with fastburn heads hooker headers Borla and yet to be determined intake.. I am in the intake biz for 25+ years so will dream something cool up..

Thanks for all of the input guys. I'll try to list as much info as I can about what I have/want to do with the car

I have:
K&N Drop In
X Pipe with 2.75" muff deletes

I want:
AFR 195's
A cam with strong midrange and I wouldn't mind a a strong top end as well (I really don't want to rev past 6k even with an after market valvetrain though. My idea of midrange is like 2500-4900ish). I really don't want to lose any low end though
I plan on sticking with the stock 10.5:1 CR
I'll buy whatever RR's will work best with whatever cam I buy (1.6 or 1.5)
Longtubes
HFC's
MSD Ignition and Spark Wires
Injectors
A tune
A higher stall one of these days...lol

I really just want a street/maybe twice a year drag car

3.08 or 2.59 and stock stall?
A stall is recommended even for the Hotcam .

I'd do gears and stall prior to heads and cam.
With stock LT1 engine ,3.45s and a stall some members have been in the 12s.

Of the two cams you listed, I like the CompCams by far.

I switched from 2.59's to 3.07's and put in a 2800 stall. This was by far the best mod as far as SOTP feels goes that I have done. I'm just getting around to finishing up a cam now. The cam I chose needs a lower gear to work correctly so a Dana 44/3.45 is in the very near future.

If you're never gonna upgrade to a 383 (or bigger), consider the 180's instead. I know that 195's are "the thing", but the 180's really are a good size for a 350/355 street car with all-around torque needs. Responsiveness off idle/low rpms would be a bit better. OTOH, with ANY thought of a stroker (bigger cubes), do the 195s.

Jake simmed a single pattern 214/214 cam for a similar LTx build. Seriously, consider that option. Or,,,,consider the LPE219. Either head won't need any split with the headers you plan.

The 214 option would peak about 5800rpms, the 219 would get you a little above 6k.

Another option is to consider the 195's -- if you WANT to use a smaller cam. Simulations say a 214/214 cam with 195's would perform damn near equal to a 219/219 cam with 180's. .

Get your lift around .525 with the 180's or .550+ with the 195s.

Im running the crane with the 195's and 1.6 rr on a 350/miniram motor.

I have a 2500 stall, it could use a bit more...3k or so.

I have the stock 3:08 gears...need a lot more.

It really wakes up from 3200-6200.

Fyi- It's the same cam as the GMPP #846.....not just the same grind, its the same cam...different box...gmpp is cheaper....both were made by crane.

I don't plan on stroking

Is it safe to rev to 6500rpm with an aftermarket valvetrain?

No. Its a fairly new motor, and i still have some kinks to work out that I have not had time to deal with. I want it perfect before I spend $$ on a dyno. It sure is quick though.
