Here is proof that you should not be travelling around on old tires, no matter how good they look. Be safe

I think under inflation at higher speeds is much more dangerous than aged tires. But I have seen alot of cracked sidewalls that people ignore.

I had a tire come apart on the pickup. What I was able to determine after inspecting the carcass was that I had not armoralled the back sidewall of the tire, only the front.
The rear sidewall let go, and peeled off the tread that was vulcanized to it.
I am now armoralling both sides of the tire and every once in a while, the tread.

Default old tires

NOTE: tires deteriorate from the inside out.

Not only can old tires detread, they get harder and harder as they get older, and don't grip the road near as well. Tires are one area you shouldn't cheap out on...replace every 7 years even if they still have plenty of tread left.

Keep your originals for car shows....drive on new tires.

Yikes... my tires are 22 years old... dry-rotted like heck, but lotsa tread left. Good thing I just bought new ones... although I'm off to check the manufacturing date on those now.

Ah, good. Made in the twenty-third week of 2009.

Around the late 90's my 91 Vette only had 22,000 miles with the original tires. There was plenty of tread, but the tires were becoming hard, and lost all adheasion. There was probably still half the tread left, but they were usless. There was no hook in them, and a new set of tires made a incredible difference. And this was when I still had the stock engine. Old tires are garbage, even if there is alot of tread left!
