L83 and L98 heads
Are the iron heads on an '84 and '85 the same? I have a set of L83 heads I can play with and not tear down my L98 until its time. I know the iron heads are alot harder to work with but I am cheap and have plenty of time to port and polish.
Thanks!
Thanks!

If your not in a real hurry to do your car I may have an option for you. I am changing the OEM aluminum heads on my 89 to an aftermarket head with bigger valves and ports, and the OEM heads will be for sale soon. I am waiting for the car to be done with the Dana 44 swap and the converter install so I can get some numbers with the improvements first. The snow up here is slowing things but I'm hopeful to have the car done before the end of February and track time right after that. As soon as I get that, the motor should be coming apart (unless they find a problem during leakdown) the only thing you will then need is center bolt valve covers and gaskets.

Thanks, Mil-man, kinda what I figured but thought I would ask.
Red, thanks for the offer but I think you missed "I am cheap" so they would hafta be pretty inexpensive. Since they are roller heads, wont they take different lifters pushrods and cam? Hate to lose the new perimeter bolt covers I just bought too.

You can port them just dont go too crazy, theres not a ton of meat on there. Should be able to squeak 225-230 out of them if you put in the time.

No your existing parts can stay the same. The heads have nothing to do with the cam and lifters. The pushrods are no factor as the guide plates on the stock heads dont touch the pushrods. They are there for assembly of the valvetrain at the engine plant. You would get a large bump in compression going from 76cc heads to 58cc heads.

but remember, you have flat top pistons. you will go from 9:1 to 11:1. unless you have a bigger cam to bleed off low speed compression, it's not that great of an idea..
speaking of low speed, your engine should run on the freeway at 1750 RPM at 75 mph.
A big cam is probably not a good idea as well.
