since the fans are wired to run constant, i wonder if i need this, i just noticed it was undone, actually looks like the plastic connector is broke and i wasnt sure if i did it cleaning or if it was done on purpose. hmmmmmmm

That is the water temp SWITCH! It's for the aux fan in front of the condensor when so equiped. Stock switch comes on around 228* or so.

The switch provided ground for the aux fan relay.

Many replace the switch with a much lower temp unit, like 200*. I asked CM to program a chip to turn the main fan on at around 195*. The combo works great. Much better than leaving the fans on all the time; which will burn out the fans and could actually reduce cooling at speed.

Driver side of block = water temp sensor
Passenger side of block = fan switch

If it's like my '89 Bird then Bluevette85 and I agree. The driver's side sensor, between 1 & 3, is the water temperature. You should fix this since the computer needs that data. On the passenger side between 6 & 8 is the fan switch.
One fan is operated by the computer. You can't change the turn on temperature for this one unless you change the chip.
The second fan is controlled by the passenger side sensor. You can buy a replacement sensor that will turn on at a lower temperature. It's an easy replacement unless you have headers. I had a problem with the replacement sensor being longer than the stock one. So the connector came in contact with the header. Had to do some plumbing. :)

Depends on the year-on an 87 the driver side is the temp switch for the aux fan-recently replaced it with a lower temp one from Ecklers.

I-FLY-AF you are right.

Actually I think we settled this a few months back for the L98.

Driver side between #1 and #3 is the temp switch.

Below TB is the ECM temp sensor

Pass side above the starter is the guage temp sensor.

I believe this is correct.

i notice the fan relays are grounded for full time operation, thumper told me in the first place so its no supprise, this is a 383 does it need more cooling than a normal L98 am i better off leaving it the way it is fans on all the time or should i configure it back to factory and get a lower temp fan switch and replace the broken engine coolant switch? anybody?

My temp sensor just has a metal tab.

I replaced my thermostat with a 180deg and bought a 185deg fan switch. You can buy a wiring kit to control both fans or just connect the green wires on the two fan relays. Mine was wired to run all the time but this is unnecessary. The temp switch on the 85 only controls the aux fan. The main fan is controlled by the ECM. By installing a lower fan temp switch and connecting the green relay wires, both fans work off the switch and the fan will also cycle properly during A/C use.

P.S. One reason people hook-up the fans for continuous use is because the ECM is fried and the fans never come on. This was the problem with mine. Bought a remanufacuted one at Autozone.

I disagree with this on an 85 - L98.

"Pass side above the starter is the guage temp sensor"

I am looking at the manual and this is the Cooling Fan Temp Switch.
