I have a 96 lt4 that has had some minor build up to the motor. Slightly upgraded rebuild with a bigger cam, bigger push rods, and bigger rocker arms. Also it has a short throw shifter, headers, and corsa exhaust. This summer im going to upgrade the clutch to a centerforce II or the centerforce dual friction. I am considering a aluminum flywheel to help free up some additional horsepower. What im wanting to know is should I have any concerns in doing so, as far as durability, performance, etc?
Namely streetability in my case, I probably would not do it again.
In hindsight, my Money would have been better spent towards a set of AFR's. Suprisingly fast revs though!
I have a Fidanza aluminum flywheel in my 86 and I'm very happy with it. With a 6 speed you'll get some annoying gear rattle if you don't use the dual mass flywheel.
In my opinion, an aluminum flywheel is best for a track day or autocross car. A steel one is better for drag racing, its easier to launch the car.
Dude- I am currently running an alloy flywheel on my 93', and I love it! The clutch is what will make the difference in driveability. Otherwise, the flywheel has been very pleasant. quick revs for sure. Will require a few more rev's to get moving though.
The KEY here is to have the alloy flywheel "balance matched" to the dual mass flywheel. I don't get the "grinding rocks" sound from my transmission, or any usual behaviors from the drivetrain. Of course, BIll (ZFdoc.com) installed my clutch and flywheel (along with the short shifter) and the transition was practically flawless.
I have my idle at 850 and its really noisy, but the noise when I accelerate in 5 or worse 6th gear from low revs is worst...really loud!
But the way it revs is awsome, and you are able to match the rpms on down shifts.
People that does the fidanza mod should really WANT the faster reving, because it come with alot of down sides, that I guess most people would not tollerate. IMO.

Running a Spec stage 2+ clutch with alum. flywheel. Only about 500 miles on it so far last year. Car revs super fast now...can't wait till spring!
I have less than 500 miles on mine.In neutral with clucth disengaged it is noisy. There is also noise below 2000rpm in gear as well.More of a rattle that goes away as rpm inceases.
I probably would'nt want it for a daily driver but mine is relegated to days I don't go to daycare so it doesent matter.
agree w/the others.....been running an aluminum Fidanza for a while now, but I am ready to go to a steel single mass.....less weight than the stock dual mass, but heavier than the Fidanza......wish the aluminum FW had better manners with the ZF, though....
