Is I cheaper to buy the whole system? I checked with a local shop here known for doing performance work, I ask them if they could connect up my existing system to the new headers. They said it would be 800 to 1000 in labor alone. I already have a set of new Magnaflow mufflers welded on to the rear tubes that I would like to keep.
I paid Midas Muffler ~$130 to connect my headers/bullet cats to my cat-back. This included altering the cat-back, 3" to 2.5" reducers, and an extra o2 bung.
I just wasn't sure how much work was performed Midas. That sounds better. It looks like maybe the price I got was that high because I wanted to use the existing cats. Looking under the car, it looks like that would be a major cut-and-paste with long tube headers. I would imagine only having them hook up to the cats would be considerably easier. Does EM sell the headers and cats? Their web site appears to be off line for 2010 price adjustments. Its March guys....moving into the 2 quarter.
There is no way you can run stock cats and long tube headers on the LTx cars. There isn't enough room for the large stock cats after the headers. If you want to run cats look into a "bullet" style.
Ok, now I am starting to get the picture. That would explain the look of panic in my exhaust guy's eyes and the 800 dollar labor price tag when I asked him to use the stock cats. I guess I will need to contact EM for info on their CATs. Thanks for the information and the group purchase info!
Been planning this for awhile cause i already have a new x pipe into new mufflers installed but will be doing new headers and cats soon. Basically your cheapest and best bet is to get whatever headers you want, then order the bullet cats at the same time. Honestly id say any of the exhaust companies and some even off of an auction site look good. Two kinds ceramic and mettalic. Mettalic will net you on average 1-2whp per cat over the ceramic as they function a little more efficiently. What I'll hopefully do is put headers on myself then slide the bullit cats over the merger and band clamp them to the headers and rest of the cat back. Hopefully that will be enough to get it to the exhaust shop to weld it all properly. Thats what i would suggest to you though i havent attempted this yet. Good luck.
Over on the EM group purchase thread there is an interesting link to a past thread regarding an EM install and the problems he ran into. Among others, it appears that some grinding is required to a brace for clearance as well as other issues. I know there is always some issues with any "bolt-on" mod but there is a limit. I think the manufacturer should provide information regarding these possible issues. I don't want to have to take a ball peen hammer to m new headers to get them to fit right.
What size primaries did you go with? I put 1-3/4 on my 72 and agree with other posts I have seen that it is almost impossible to get a wrench on standard hex bolts. Others say hex socket cap bolts work well. I ultimately used studs with small diameter 12 point nuts. Still had to grind down a wrench to get around a couple of them but it worked.
Thanks for the info. I am going to call EM tomorrow with a few questions and maybe I will jump on board the GP.
