is it my waterpump?

So I drive my car on flat ground, on cruise control, the temp drops about 8 degrees when I down shift to 5th from 6th. I'm thinking the flow has reduced due to the lower RPM, duh, but would a water pump that's degrading give the same indications?? I changed the thermostat last year when this happened on a trip and it fixed the problem but I would have expected it to last longer then a year??

Have you ever cleaned the debris out of your radiator fins? Bottom feeder highway vacuum ya know.

What temps you running? In 5th the engine will be turning alittle faster, so the wp would be too. It takes a very poorly maintained cooling system (lotsa rusty looking coolant) to erode the wp impellar.

yep, I try and keep it clean, it does have a new radiator but that was replaced way before I noticed this trend. Just thought maybe somebody else had seen this, I've searched but couldn't find any info. I have about 99K on the car so maybe I'll just change the pump and opti for good luck. (gives me a chance to clean in there!!)

You are right about that. Can do some major cleaning with that stuff out of the way.
