Though you can try up to 10 degrees of base timing, and you will pick up a little bit of low end torque. If you get any detonation, back it off to 8. Still pinging, down to 6. I run 10 degrees on my 84 on regular pump gas with no detonation, and it did wake it up a bit off the line.

Thanks Friz, This is that car that i asked about last month. I got it for $2000. The ohm meter shows open circuit on the pick up coil so I have to pull the distributor. Hopefully that's all that it will need to make it run again. I have not taken any pics yet. When I got it home we had a dumping of snow so it sat buried on the car trailer until a couple days ago. I'll try a little extra initial timing, but in the mountains it won't take as much. By the way, is there any ignition upgrades that would be better while I've got the distributor out.
Also be sure disconnect the timing connector when setting the base timing. Disconnect and re-connect that connector with the ignition 'OFF' to prevent any possibility of a voltage spike.
Once the base timing is set and the distributor locked down, shut down the engine then disconnect the battery for about 30 seconds or so in order to clear the error code that gets set when the ECM detects the engine running with the EST disconnected.
