Default My last step improving flow(vid)

Well I spent the day out in the garage with my drill press, die grinder, and my valves. I've ported the heads already, so the next step was to reshape the valves a little bit. I thought I'd make a video too so here we go:

I did somewhat of the same thing when I rebuilt my heads. I noticed the sharp ridge on both int and exh valves. I also went into the bowl area, particularly the transition from the bowl to the seat. I couldn't believe the mismatch.

I didn't flow the heads afterwards but felt that it was time well spent.

Thanks for the vid.

It's simply removing material from the path of flow.

I don't have access to a flow bench, but it would have been nice to put a number on what I've done with the heads. No need to touch the seats, I didn't get near them.

I agree, as long as a fella's got his heads apart, might as well do everything he can to improve them. Glad you liked the video

you got right on the valves seat in the video, you better lap those valves before you install them...

I will be lapping them in, but the reason I used the blue dye was so I didn't grind where the valve made contact with the seat, didn't come close

I have no idea if what you're doing is going to help or hurt flow, but I enjoyed the video.

Thanks Mike, that was Metallica's instrumental tune Orion, off the Master of Puppets album.

I don't know either but Vizard wrote about it in his heads book, so I figured it can't hurt

It would be interesting to take one untouched valve and one you took your grinder to, stick them both in the same port and have them flowed for curiosities sake.

On grinding on those though....who told you to do that?

I got the idea from David Vizard's book How to Build and Modify Chevrolet Small-Block V-8 Cylinder Heads. Did I do something wrong?

why not to a machinist and make it the right way ? if you lose your hand on that than you can damage your valve? right ?

Kangi,
This might be a dumb question or something I may have misheard some where along the line, but is this same as swirling the valves?...:o

Great, just when I told myself I was going to leave my heads alone. Well, time to buddy up with my neighbor and see if he'll let me use his drill press...................

Not to rock the boat guys but imo leave this stuff alone, cant just blindly take grinders to parts expecting to make a power breakthrough;,ore than likely the part will get ruined, not work right or worse yet fail on you.
Kangi sure you know to get the valve job redone before dropping those in. have them inspected to make sure they didht get weakened in the process. not criticising as it seems youre having fun modding your stock stuff, just sayin to know where the line is and all .

why not purchase new valves? or at least a precision process of doing it? how do you know all the valves will be machined the same amount?
