Default Questions about Optisparks

Are both Summit and Accel brand Optisparks as good as the Gm?They are all right at $250 new I have seen some new ones on ebay lately called GM Performance parts that are going for about $360 if memory serves me correct. Is the GM performance opti the same as the regular $250 gm opti but with just a higher price with the word Performance on it?

As far as reputation goes, neither the Accel or Summit optis are as good as the GM and I don't recall any discussion about the GM performance being any different than the regular GM.

When I replaced mine, I agonized over springing the extra money for an MSD or Dynaspark but ended up going with a GM unit. If I had an earlier non-vented car, I probably would have gone with a Dynaspark.

If you do an archive search, I think you will find that there is no consensus between those three options. I think most agree that you should stick with one of those three, but there has been lots of discussion and even a poll and while many people have reported good results with MSD and Dynaspark, some have reported problems which is pretty much the same as for the OEM unit. If I thought one of those were actually the end-all of opti problems, I would gladly spring the extra money for it, but as of now the jury is still out.

Your profile says 1996 Vette....which takes the vented opti. In my opinion GM got it right with the vented opti and I use stock GM optis with no issues.

The opti in my 1995 has survived many jaunts to almost 7000 rpms and even some bumps off of the 7005 rpm fuel cutoff.

OPTI on my 1995 impala had almost 160,000 miles when car was hit and totaled (actually drove it home but insurance company decided to toal it)

So in summary I go for proven performance and longevity of OEM OPTI .

my 1996 opti went 145,000 miles; if the vacum vent lines hadn't deteriorated and failed it would probably still be going. Replaced it with another GM
