I am going to my boss's dad's house today to get my completely shot front brakes replaced today. He has a grinder thing that turns (sp?) rotors and all.
What i need to know before hand is, are the rotors their own piece that just comes off, or are they one piece as part of some other pieces?
Does anyone have a pic of them or a diagram of how to remove them they could send me this morning?
You will need just to remove your brake calipers and the rotors can just be removed from the spindle... No problem... They are 1 piece stock units..... Good luck!
The caliper mount has to be removed also. 2 big bolts hold it, which may be very tight. I use a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a pipe on the handle to get more leverage. If your buddy has a brake lathe then he will know how to remove them for sure!
excellent... thanks guys!
Thats what i needed to hear...
My boss was not sure if the rotor came off by itself or if it was part of a bigger piece that should just be replaced... but this makes life MUCH easier :)
Now, i just hope they are not ground down too much already :(
My rotors on my '92 were like welded on when I upgraded to a 13" GT brake sysem. It took 2 cans of Liquid Wrench, 4 c-clamps. one flat iron bar to use as a fulcrom for the c- clamps,a rubber malet for some gentle persuassion and 2 days time (one day for the front and one for the rear)...I hope you have better luck than me in getting them off. And mine is a "garaged queen" never been rained on!
Oh BTW, Chevy says not to reuse the caliper mounting bolts but to replace them. I did at $5.00 a piece but I think you could get by using a little threadlock on the bolts...much cheaper.
