periodically when I go to start the car all I get is a couple clicks and then nothing. I can turn the key a couple times and will get the clicks again. Then suddenely it will turn over. What would be the cause of this problem?
I second that. When the VATS is wigging out it's like turning the key in a car that has no battery :yesnod:
Does it do this often? Under any certain conditions?
it does this pretty often, I would say 5 or so times a week maybe a couple more. And there is no consistancy to them. It does this on a cold start, or after I stoped for a minute at the gas station. In warm and cold weather. I recently changed my battery and it still does it, so it is not the battery. Is the started going?
Remove the battery cables and clean the cable lugs so they are bright. Go to the auto parts store and buy two 5/8" brass battery terminal bolts and throw the factory wimpy 5/16" bolts away. If you still have the problem, then your starter solenoid contacts are wearing out. To prove the battery and its connections are ok, measure the battery voltage when it clicks but doesn't turn over, the battery voltage should never fall below 9.0 volts. If it does, the battery is discharged or at the end of its life, or the cable connections to the battery terminals are poor.

Re: IS this a VATS issue? (MBVette)
I agree you can rule out the VATS..... If you clean the battery cables, and get no result, then the next would be the starter...... I had a similar problem on my 86, when the car was hot, it would not start, but when it was cold it would start no problem...... Turned out to be a defective starter..... New starter with a heat shield, haven't had a problem since.
