Just bought a rearend for my son's 93 and was wondering, how hard is it to replace the front and 2 sides shaft seals?

Thanks!!

To replace all of the seals the rear end will have to come out.
Then remove the pinion yoke to get at the pinion shaft seal.
Unbolt the batwing so you can undo the snaprings in order to remove both side shafts and replace those seals.
If you have a lot of miles on it you might as well give it a full overhaul and replace pinion and carrier bearings as well. All of this is covered in the FSM. If you don't have one here is a link to the one Dana Spicer has available on their web site:

I've done it and it's not really difficult. There are two snap rings that hold the axle shafts in place. They're really hard to see but they're there. Remove them and the shafts will pull right out. The pinion, you'll probably need a impact wrench to get the nut loose. Also, IIRC that nut needs to be torqued to 150lbs when you reassemble it. Just remove the old seals and install the new ones. I used a block of wood to tap mine in. Good luck!

The one I did had 95k on it and was fine. It just depends on how they were used through the years.

Surf,

Its a PITA but doable. Hardest part is the side seals, remove the snap rings that hold the stub axles in, then you can remove the stub axles, after that you can remove the carrier/posi assembly and remove the pinion nut and pinion, replace pinion seal, reverse order to reinstall. If only doing the seals, you don't have to remove the carrier assembly. To inspect all bearing surfaces, you have to remove carrier and pinion.
Hardest part is pulling the spyder gears out if you go that route, it would be much easier if you have a clutch pack compression tool so the spyders come right out with no problem. On the pinion, you'll have to mark the pinion nut and threaded area of the pinion before dissassembly so when you reassemble you put the nut back right where it was and maybe just a little more as long as there is not a lot of drag on rotating the pinion by hand before installing carrier assembly.

While you have it apart, good to check the condition of your clutch pack. Good time to look at the side stub bearings for wear and both carrier bearings and pinion bearings for undue wear, any pitting on the rollers or races, replace.

So to answer your question, it can be done without specialized tools if you take your time and are in no hurry.

I just did one and found the seals and stub axle bearings at Advanced Auto Parts, bearings were Torrington and seals were National, just as the originals are. they had to order them, took 2 days for them to get them to the store and prices were real reasonable.

Good luck.
