The symptoms of the rapid overheating problem seemed to point to a stuck thermostat. I removed the 'stat and ran the car without it. Ran fine in the garage so I took it out for a short run. Did great, so I took it out on a long trip. Water temp. stayed right around 160, oil temp 192. The car works great without a 'stat in the 82* Florida temps.
So, I thought, it must have been a stuck 'stat. Just for fun I tried the pan of water test with the 'stat and you know what? The thing opened perfectly at 160! Now I'm worried about what might have been the real cause of the overheating
 Is it possible for a 'stat to stick just one time due to some freak occurrance? It has worked properly until now. The coolant is old but clean looking. This morning something was keeping the coolant from circulating and removing the 'stat cured the problem. Could it actually be the water pump going bad? It doesn't make noises, doesn't wobble when I grab the pulley and try to move it, and there is no sign of a leak around it.
Maybe possible that it stuck only temporarily. Maybe the gasket was off a bit and caught the edge that opens on the stat. Did it run ok temps right after you put the new stat in? Could it have been upside down? Back in the bad old days, i saw guys bang on the thermostat housing with a wrench to unstick a bad stat. Not a very good fix. Since they are so cheap, i would just replace it if you can't figure out why it malfunctioned this one time.
Not yet but I plan to. I can't figure what might have caused a 1 time failure. It worked fine right up until this morning. The gasket was in the right spot, there was no junk inside the housing, etc.
The thing works fine in a pan on the stove. Maybe I'll leave it there.
I had the exact same thing. Mine was stuck open and oil & water temps wouldn't go over 165. After removing it I put it in a pot of water on the stove along with the new one and they both opened and closed exactly the same; 3 seperate times. Put the new one in and temps went back to normal. Just threw the old one away and scratched my head and had a beer.
