On a '94 can you just unplug the CAGS without setting a trouble code? If so,...where exactly is it and what does the plug look like? From what I've read there are two plugs on the tranny...I don't want to get them confused.
The plugs are on the driver side of the tranny, just in front of the shifter. Actually, the wires go to the CAGS solenoid, so this might help. They're easy to get to if you can get the car slightly off the ground.
I bought the plug set from Eckler's for $10 b/c I heard if you just unplug them it sends an error code to the computer. Supposedly the plug set has the right resistor in it to simulate the system active. Also, the plugs keep debris out.
I believe you can disconnect the switch but I would recommend you purchase a new Cags Plug set from Ecklers. The part number is 22712 and it is $10.00. this connector allows you to disarm the system without setting a code light in your dash. it also protects both open connectors from contamination once you disconnect. The other switch you mentioned should be in the same vicinity and this is your backup light switch.
I've got mine unplugged and just hanging loose on my 93, and have not had any codes. I don't drive it in the rain so I'm not concerned about dirt or corrosion.
The "one to four" light on the dash will still come on when the CAGS is unplugged.
Yup, forgot to mention the 1-to-4 light will still come one -- even with the CAGS seal set from Eckler's.
Don't know if this is true or not, but I read that although the service engine (or whatever) light doesn't come on, the error code is still recorded. So, if you were to have a dealership run a diagnostic, they'd probably tell you there's something wrong with the CAGS. Probably folklore though...
Does the code setting effect anything? I could care less about the dealer seeing a code when they pull them if when it sets the code it effects nothing in the way of how the car runs.
Probably not. Seems like there are enough people out there with them just disconnected and no $10 plug set. At a minimum, you'd probably want to seal off the connectors -- consider rubber-banding (or something better) some plastic over the disconnected plugs.
I've also heard that if you have any type of performance chip, it'll disengage the CAGS system. So, if you ever decide to install one, try plugging the CAGS back together and see if it's over-ridden.
Well guys,...I just went ahead and unplugged it yesturday when I was under the car changing the oil. Wrapped both ends of the plug in some small plastic jewelry bags,....then used some electrical tape to seal it off real good. The taped them up out of the way so as to make sure they had no chance of contacting the exhaust in any way. The light still comes on as many have said, but no more skip shift and so far no check engine light indicating a trouble code being set. :D

The 1-4 light will still come on. You don't need the kit for a 94, it will never set the check engine light. I believe you only need the plug kit for 96s and C5s.
