Default MPG difference 2.59 vs 3.07

Swapped out my son's 2.59 for 3.07, before I did that, I went up on the interstate, reset MPG after setting cruise to 70 and drove for 10 miles. After swap did the same thing, reset MPG at same spot(used a billboard) and after doing that, the 3.07 got 25.2 mpg and the 2.59 got 29.6.

One note, the run w/2.59 was a clear day slight breeze and run on 3.07 was windy and cloudy, temp was about the same.

SOTP feel w/3.07 is noticiable but not a big difference from a standing stop, over 2.59.

This car has headers and 2300 stall converter and is a 93 a4.

Do you remember what the rpm at 70mph with both gears was?

I have 2.59s in my 88 L98 and am considering swapping to some 3.07s in the future as well. Would be interested to hear of how this swap affects L98 mpg. Anyone?

Also, just for knowledge's sake, what other gear ratios are available between 3.07 and 3.45? Anything?

Sorry, did not note the RPM, in 84 the performance gear was 3.33. They are extremely hard to find.

I have a 1990 Vert auto. Swapped the 2.73's to 3.54's.At 70 mph; I went from approx. 1700 rpm to 2250 rpm approx. Yes I lost m/gal. but Im retired and the Vette is not a DD; just a fun toy to enjoy. The 3.54's are a nice mix with the L98.

I would say that you are getting the correct mpg.

I have a 95A4 with a 3.07, lt headers and a 3200tc and drive 50 miles every day. On an uncrowded highway at a flat 70mph I average about 23 and in daily commuter stop and go about 16.

I drove quite a few late model C4s with both 2.59 and 3.07 before I bought mine and frankly I thought there was a world of difference between the two .... not so much from a dead stop but much more on the road say when flooring it and going from 40 mph - 80 mph. To me it felt like I had two additional cylinders. I'm very happy that I went with the 3.07 but yes there is a difference in gas milage.

Hope this helps

For what its worth, ..I'm going to leave the tall gears in my 87...its fast enough for me and I love the mileage,..My alternative vehicle for a commuter is (you should be sitting down)..a 93 C1500 454SS,..running a 496ci BB 4.10 gears and 2500 stall with a Lunati roller cam ....my gas mileage?...8.5highway and 4 stoplight to stoplight?

Here's a thread about mileage on my '87 A4 w/3.07s:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-t...s-mileage.html

I did the math when I filled up & my actual was about 27 1/2

Well folks, I messed up. When I did my rearend swap, I also changed the oil and took out the A.I.R. system. Seems I disconnected one of my o2's.
Hooked it back up and redid the test and I got 27.4 mpg at 70. :o

Are you getting the mpg from the readout or did you do the math? My 86, with the 3.07 rear gets 23 highway and about 16 in town. It has no running issues and is totally stock. Originally the readout showed 23 in town and about 27 highway. It was not getting that mpg. I put a pcmforless chip in it to turn my fans on earlier and dump egr. It now reads right and works out if I do the math. The thing is, it always got the same mileage, just the readout was wrong.

You are comparing a L98 to a LT1, I changed the VSS and driven gear and speedo and mpg are correct.

And my car has headers and stall converter.
