Why is it so hard to get a distributor cap for my 84? I bought one each from O'Rielly's and NAPA and BOTH were wrong! Either that or I've got a RARE distributor! Both of the above caps were for a bolt down application. But my car has the spring loaded keepers on it. Which is the norm?
Oh and the first cap was my mistake since I didn't check it when I bought it at O'Rielly's. But the second one my wife picked up from NAPA for me this afternoon.
My 84 came with the spring loaded L retainers, should be easy to find at the parts stores, the people those stores hire must like passing the time while wasting yours.
I had the same problem. Must be a system wide goof up! I brought back the bolt down cap and Gabe at O'Really figured out the equivalent with the spring loaded retainers. Can't remember what it was from but I think it was from a Chevy PU.
I've learned to bring my old parts in to compare to the new ones whenever I get parts from a local store, seems like their databases are not very good. From distributor caps to oil filters they have screwed something up for me. The funny thing is they usually have the right part you just have to help them find it
Just the opposite happend for me - one vender listed the spring retainer type cap for my '85 and had no listing for the bolt-down type which I required. The next vendor that I went to had it right. As kangi noted - know your parts and don't give in to the database...it isn't always right.

Both good ideas that I SOMETIMES follow. But when I'm in a hurry, I just let 'em hand them out to me. Then when I get home and find out it isn't the right part....T\then I'm REALLY in a hurry!
The dealer adds a lot of money to his parts because they have a huge overhead.
just my 2c
Yeah, I know that. I hate the dealer. But when you can't find something locally. And it would be cheaper getting it from the dealer than ordering online and paying shipping, I've gone to the dealer.
the napa number is rr171 or rr171sb for the cheaper one.
Yeppers I got the rr171 cap. Found that when the PO put on new wires, he didn't use the ones for the HEI distributor that fit the "halo" thingy! They ARE AC Delco wires tho!
That's kinda like saying that you need a starter for a small block chevy. They changed them by "just thaaaaat much!"
The one they gave me was set up for being bolted down. The one on the 84 uses the four spring clips to hold it down. The rest of the cap is the same.
