Ok, I was given some advice that no matter how I move forward with a stealth ram, i will need to be adjusting the ECM parameters.
I was told to use the existing wiring harness and ECM that I have with a 90' TPI.
But Holley is introducing a new EFI set up at the end of the month that they say is more for the streetrodder. it quick tunes with the controller and it is self learning.
Is it worth the money ($2100.00) or does all factory OBD1's self learn to. And that's the nature of th computer to begin with.
I've tuned cars that had various oem's ecm's and I've worked with the Holley commander 950's. The OEM ecm will provide many more tables (with the right hacks, even more) that allow for better tuning capabilities. What I found with commander 950 (current firmware build 3.07 and software) is slow uploading, minimum tables and there are more glitches and crashes using the software/hardware when compared to other software/hardware available for oem. Some of what I consider to be "basic" tuning tables are not available in the commander (tables/add ons are running in the back ground and cannot be tweaked) as opposed to OEM ecm's.
My advice is learn and delve into tuning, as opposed to their newest offering that is the "miracle one step tunes itself" motto...the rewards will be there. If you need to use a aftermarket there are better options. I would look at ones that offer good tuning capabilities (FAST for example, even the older accel), but all require you to be able to tune.
Ok, well I looked up MegaSquirt and for me to but everything I need It would cost me $1500.00 This does include the cost of the stealth ram, fuel rails and new injectors. So for another $600, wouldn't it be worth it just to buy the complete new set up from Holley. Remember, I am just looking to tune it once and drive. This is a driver/cruiser car.
But if the OEM ECM can do just as much, well I have two of them. I do not know much about tuning and not sure how hard it is. Maybe that's why i am leaning toward the Holley set up. But also looking for guidance.
mseven .... would you stick with the oem, and if so will it make for a great cruising car?
Personally I like the oem ecm's, and is what I am using on my car. In either case , whether the oem or the Holley 950, both use speed density type of strategy. S.D. has more or a learning/tuning curve than a maf version car.
I am not sure of the package with the stealth ram, but if it's the 950 commander than the above applies. As to dive-ability the oem is fine, but again, tuning is were some might give up. I would rather learn how, than pay the additional bucks (let alone for an unknown product I don't believe the newest holley is available yet) and really be no further ahead. I have tested/tried some other "supposed self tweaking" software that is out there for the OEM ecm's and found that while it made changes they were not very good.
Mega squirt, Biig Stuff, FAST, ACCEL etc. all require you to do the tuning. If you choose to become involved in tuning yourself it will require reading, diligence, a methodical approach, and some hardware. The hardware/software end is much more affordable, and because you will not be dealing with a firebreathin', cammed to the moon ****, you shouldn't incur that much difficulty. Other options for you also include buying a tune for the stock ecm, which in your case would be pretty easy to dial in for your set-up.
Download tuner pro RT and learn how to tune the stock ECM. I have tuned a lot of ODB1 GM vehicles. There is nothing out there that comes close to the power of the late model GM ecms. Once you get it done the drivabilty will be better. I really like the late model ODB1 LT1 flash ecms, 94-95. They are sequential fuel injection. You can even convert to run an LS1 ecm for way cheaper then that. Check out http://www.eficonnection.com/eficonnection/default.aspx
Spend some time over at thirdgen.org there is a lot of tuning info over there.
