Default 1996 Exhaust

What all is entailed in changing the headers on the LT4? I have headers and basically straight pipe exhaust but would like to put the stock system back on. Can anyone tell me exactly what it takes? Does the motor have to be jacked up? It looks like once the headers are unbolted the whole system will just come out the bottom of the car...

Lemme know

For the most part all you need to do is separate the headers from the rest of the exhaust and work from there. The exhaust should come down with just a few bolts. There are bolts by each hanger (where each muffler would be and where the resonator would be)..

For the headers it should be fairly simple. As long as you can unbolt it from the engine you shouldnt have any problems. I am not sure that you will have to remove anything, but maybe someone with headers will chime in!

Why are you going back to stock? What setup do you have now?
Good Luck!!!

You want to go from longtube headers or shorties back to stock?

Longtubes, your gonna need some parts besides the manifolds.

Shorties should be a direct swap.

Stock to longtubes - I cheated, put on the headers and cats. Threw my mufflers in the back and drove it tho the muffler shop.

I dropped my complete, stock 96 LT1 exhaust system without having to do any jacking of the engine, etc.

I did jack up the car and put it on four jack stands, but after that, I had access to all the exhaust mounting bolts and everything came right off. Well, to be specific, a couple of bolts did break (rusted in) but they were easily replaced when I re-installed the same system.

Once everything was unbolted, I dragged everything out from under the car and stored all the pieces along side the house until I finished swapping the engines(like when I pulled the stock LT1 and installed the 388) and when doing the heads, cam, valve train mods to my son's 96 LT1.

Pretty easy to do aided by me laying on my back the whole time. There was one CAT brace bolt that was a little difficult to reach, but even that one wasn't too hard.

Just remember to plug in the sensors before raising the exhaust back into place. Trying to plug one nof them in after the exhaust has been re-bolted in place will result in a lot of cuts and scratches on your hand(s). Reaching up and around is what caused that.

Hope thish helps.

Jake

Awesome!! Thats what I was looking for! I have long tube headers and no cats and no mufflers and its just too loud and resonates inside the car too bad. Dont wanna go with more aftermartket stuff, just wanna put the stock set up back on soon as I can get it. I will prolly just replace the mufflers themselves when I get the stock stuff back on.

Thanks everyone!
