After searching here, on Google and at thirdgen.org for several hours I still haven’t found the answer I’m looking for so here it goes...
I have plans to build a 2 transistor aldl cable which uses a 9-pin serial connection that my laptop cannot use. And after researching I have found very conflicting information as to whether or not a usb to serial adapter will work for data logging so I was wondering if by using a usb end on my data cable I would save all the drama of working and not working adapters. And if so would it be as simple as just plugging the wires to the right spot on the usb plug? I’m including the plans I have for the data cable as well as a pin out of both the usb and 9-pin connectors
Thanks to AGENT 86 for this one
And please don’t make fun of my wonderful paint skillz!
I bought one from the site below and it works perfectly with my Laptop and Tuner Pro software, I have also tried it with all the other available software and it works fine.
id prefer not to buy one cuz i cant really afford it at the moment. if im stuck and cant build one i will just have to wait. thanks for the reply though!
so its seems there really is no way to diy this reliably... which sucks. by the time i add in the adapter it cost almost as much as the cable from aldlcable.com. any reason to go with moates over aldlcable.com? seems to be the same thing only ones is about $20 cheaper. im using tunerproRT btw

You will still need the adapter. The cable carries an RS232 signal that the USB port on the laptop will not read. I suck at explaining things. If you call Andy at AKM he can explain it to you. He makes a great cable, I bought one several years ago. Craig Moates is also great to deal with.

First I have not done any PCM tuning yet but I do quite a bit about PCM networks. I have implemented products that use J1850 VPW (GM) J1850 PWM (Ford) ISO 9141 (asia) J1939 (All new vehicles) and so on. I also have done a USB to CAN bridge / gateway, and in fact one product as all the vehicle network interfaces on this single product and I forward messages from the OBDII connector out a CAN network, then from a CAN/USB adapter into the PC. We do this to reverse engineer certain messages. Anyway, don't know if I can help but exactly are you trying to do? I am up to my eyeballs in work, but if I understand your problem maybe I can help.
