I think the trans may be going out of my 84. The converter kicks in and out on normal driving cruising down the highway. I pulled the dipstick out and checked the fluid, it was black not the normal red color and smelled a little burnt. Think it can be taken care of with a normal fluid change with some conditioner or do you think a total rebuild is in the works...if the latter what do you think a cost would be to rebuild it? The car only has 53,000 miles and I don't run it hard...

Save your money. Replacing the fluid and filter will not help.
Cost to properly overhaul varies from $1000-$2500 depending on what part of the country you are in.

Pete K thanks for the reply that was what I was afraid of. I was hoping you would be one of the ones that replied to this thread. I'm going to shoot you a PM..again thanks..
Recently I have repaired 1.5 nonCorvette transmissions (second one didn't have to be taken apart completely)
Here is advise if you want to do it yourself:
Buy professional tr. manual and read it for 20 hours until you feel confident. Find transmission mechanic from dealership and pay him $20 each time you go and ask him a question. they make lots of money and if you need 5 min of their time pay them enough to keep them happy.
My guess tr repair kit cost 150+100 converter+tr cooler flush $20+$100 consultations. about $400. Fluid 20, rear main seal 10
Professional mechanic will spend about 2 hours rebuilding your tranny.
Good luck!
Just dropped it off the trans shop. They pulled the pan while I was there. The fluid in the pan was not dirty, no sludge, or metal particles in the pan. I am going ahead and let them service it and put in a shift kit and work his magic. He runs top sportsman and his son has a rail they drag. I trust him totally on what he does. He also advised to change the thermostat..while we drove it never did come up to temp. I am also having a code 51 which means a bad prom or ecm possibly...he said these could be causing the problems I am having..I am going to replace the thermostat and replace the chip...better than a total rebuild...thanks to all who replied...

Not a chance. Black and burnt smelling fluid is NEVER a good sign. This is why trans shops are sometimes leery of flushing an old trans that hasn't been serviced. It becomes a thing like yours and the owner is hoping for a "Hail Mary" flush to cure his ills. Not trying to rag on you but at this time, you need to start saving for a good trans.
