i went through the correct procedure. followed the order at top dead center. rotated 360. and then did the rest. i tightened them until i felt alittle resistance while spining the push rod, and then went an extra 3/4 of a turn to set the preload.
what confuses me is when i turned the crank 360 to finish the other rockers. the ones i had just finished were so loose i could rotate the rocker right off the push rod???????? what is going on here?????
When you rotated the engine, the lifters on bled down when encountering resistance while raising the pushrods. This is normal. Assuming your initial adjustment was correct, nothing to worry about and no need to redo them.
Yup. Now the question is, when you originally found zero lash before pre-loading, were they collapsed at all then ? There's a light spring in the lifters to hold them fully "extended" even if they're fully bled down, but if you aren't careful you might unknowingly compress it. A lot of people do the adjustment with the engine running to avoid these issues, but that has it's drawbacks (like hot oil slinging all over the place).
I noticed this looseness when I adjusted my valves, so I readjusted them. Car wouldn't start because I tightened them too much and the valves were open all the time. Had to loosen and start all over again. Moral: adjust correctly once and all will be well.
ya i did the same thing, readjusted them. so i will need to start over. after they have "bled down", how do i readjust them? should i loosen them all back up, and wait for the lifters to open back up?
If you have just put in 'new' lifters, you may have to re-adjust them after you get it started up and the lifters pump up. I found that I could NOT get them right until then.

I emailed you the procedure that another forum member sent me. It worked well.

I just sent you a email of the procedure I's used for years and the one I send to guys who have the same problem as you.
