I noticed that Hookers 16720 Y-Pipe (for the 2149 and 2151's) is for 86-91 only. Would it be simpler and cheaper to get the 16720 Y pipe or use my existing front Y pipe as a donor? Anybody know the street price of the 16720? I also need a cat... so factoring that into the equation I was wondering if the newer style (86-up) configuration flows better than the 84-85 design. Looks like just flange changes but not sure. Thanks :)
You can use the hooker pipe if you switch over to the 86 and up style cat. OR you can have your factory pipe modded to work.
Personally I would get a custom exhaust made from the collectors back that incorporates some sort of X pipe or H pipe and not even worry about using theirs or yours.
So, I take you are suggesting a dual exhaust system? ... and use dual bullet style cats? Yes, I still need to be able to pass emissions. Put the X or H pipe inbetween cat(s) and mufflers?... or before cat(s)? Thanks for responding :)

I think that the only reason the 16720 pipe isn't listed for '84-'85 is that it doesn't have the 4 bolt flange for the '84-5 converter to bolt to. You could make (have made) a flange to weld to the 16720 and it should bolt right up. Summit shows the 16720 for about $130.00.
An "H" or "X" should be between the headers and the converters. The "X" is much more desirible.
I had to gut my cat (got plugged) and passed emissions OK. It may depend on your test and whether you have a "visual" or not.
Dual cats CAN be installed , staggered, in the tunnel, the approx stock location.
Instead of messing with Y-pipes and single cat, seems like a good time to go dual cat / dual exhaust? Now that AZ emissions has gotten sensible- they don't care what's under there as long as it passes. There's a guy down the street who did my first system with a pair of Carsound bullet cats and dual 2-1/2" pipes for a decent price. We're so close you should stop by and I'll introduce ya.
