I would check the starter, the solenoid might be bad. Just a thought.

First, check your starter.
Second, "new tune on chip".
Have you driven the car since you did that.
If the SES light doesn´t come on at all, then maybe the chip isn´t seated properly.
If it is, then it might be the ECM itself that is toast.

According to the L98 startsequence, the engine should turn even if the ECM is toast, it just doesn´t start.

Check your ECM........if I put a chip in backwards on my 86-89 ECM, the fans come on immediately.

Rotate the chip 80 degrees and try that, you should be good to go

thanks for the responses!

car has not been driven w/ new chip.
i tried the old chip and same thing.
i aligned the notch in the chip with the notch in the carrier.
carrier can only go in one way
im thinking it might be a wiring issue?

how do you check the starter or solenoid?

If you did not change anyting with the wiring, then it should be ok.

the starter will not fire with the chip in 180 degrees / worong

do you have a ZIF Moates socket like this?

Well, you can't read any codes because they are mostly there for emissions device monitoring. If your car isn't running, there is nothing to check, "you ain't pollutin". ninja edit: Yes you can get codes for TPS too high too long if it's shorted and other stuff, but very little that controls "starting" is monitored and reported, especially AT startup.

The combination of lights seems odd to me too. I don't have the FSM in front of me so I can't be real specific but have a look at the wires and relays in the battery and brake booster area. There are fusible links there and just perhaps something is interrupting flow to or redirecting power flow away from the solenoid.

check power to the starter when you turn the key. If no power then you could have a bad starter relay in the dash.

Also make sure all your connections to the battery and starter are clean.

Sounds like you have 2 issues here. First no crank. As has been suggested check for power to the starter when the key is turned to crank.
Second you should get a code 12 if everything is OK. There must be a connection or other problem with the ECM. I know on an 85 you have to remove the original chip socket to use Moates' set up. Did you do this yourself or have Moates do it?

I am pretty sure the notch in the chip goes on the left

Default update

engine now cranks but does not start

fan no longer comes on

i removed the starter and checked it by jumping the solenoid
it worked fine so i cleaned the connections and reinstalled it

check engine light on momentarily w/ key in run then goes out
no code 12 using paper clip
i replaced the 25yr old? ecm but the results are the same
there is power to the ecm
prom is installed correctly and seated

im thinking it may have something to do with the new ignition coil, module, pickup coil and capacitor i installed in the distributor

im at a standstill and out of ideas

any comments or suggestions are appreciated
