Mechanic is going to drop the cover, drain and replace fluid, and replace the "posi" and seal it back up for 75 dollars. Is this for real? Seems really cheap....
FYI, no I am not going to try to tackle this project myself....Rather let the mechaic do it. He has never let me down oh btw, it's a D36.
It is a 15 minute job to pump out old fluid and the pump in 1.5 quarts of gear oil and 4 oz of posi lube.
Total cost $8-9 oil
$6 lube
Yeah, you can check the level using the old finger technique, unscrew the filler plug while the right wheel is higher then left, insert finger.
If you do not touch fluid, fluid is low.
I told him I wanted a fluid change and he said hed drop the cover and change it that way and mentioned something about a positive? and I said posi and he said yes and said something about replacing something to do with that? Must be the lube....Fluid change sounds good. Thanks guys!
Sure there is. Granted, there's a big old batwing in the way, but there's still a cover. Oakley's mechanic will realize it's easier to pump out the old fluid once he looks at it, but the end result is the same and the price is fair.
If all he is going to do is pump the fluid out and refill, you should do it yourself, save half and have a pump left over for next time. He probably doesn't realize that the IRS rearend is unlike most other live axle rears.
