Just got done replacing my leaking water pump with an Edelbrock 8815 in my 87 l98. I also cleaned out all the trash in front of the radiator.
Went to refill the system with the engine running and it burped out all the coolant when it got up to aprox 195 degree's. Thinking it was just air purging,I then added more coolant and it pushed it out with a lot of force.
Good news nobody got hurt, just a friggin mess
I have packed the system before and never had this happen.
Not sure why this happened Could it be my thermostat is stuck closed?
My understanding to refill the coolant system is to start the motor and fill the radiator and wait for the thermostat to open. Once open, rev the engine a little and top of the coolant and put the cap on.
Unfortunately for me I did not get to the last step.
Sounds like an air pocket let loose and founds its way to the exit! I can't even open a container of coolant without dumping half of it on the floor and/ or engine. I feel your pain
I got tired of fighting air lock in the system. A single 1/16" hole in the thermostat eliminated that. Stat still functions as it should.

Thanks for the replies, I thought it might have been air. I definitely will give the thermostat a quick drill.
