I have heard that when swapping out the dualmass flywheel for a lightweight, you need to expect for there to be additional noise.
My ZF6 (1,000 miles new) now makes a LOUD RATTLE when I let the clutch out (at a stand still). Is it normal to endure a loud rattle.
My builder changed out the oil in the ZF6 to a much heaver weight, and nicely informed me that I, probably, would have to live with the noise.
Does anyone have experience with this?
I do not have a lightweight aluminum FW in mine yet, but it has been said that due to the angle that the gears are cut in the transmission that it is very noisy when your at idle with the clutch pedal out.
Yes, it will be very noisy. I put a steel flywheel in mine about a month ago, and it is loud. If you read through ZF doctors page, he tells you all about the dual mass flywheels and why they were used. Don't worry about the noise as long as it does what it's supposed to. I also put the Castrol TWS - 10W 60 motor oil that ZF recommends for the tranny. It seems to shift nice and smooth and has less resistance than when I had heavier gear oil in it. The stuff is made for BMW M series engines and is kinda pricey, but it seems to work great.

Yup, I have a Fidanza aluminum flywheel and a Spec stage 4+ clutch and it's loud at idle with clutch out and sometimes moving as well. I've been told not to worry, but....
Yes, Mark, it's very loud and sounds almost like something is broken. In the staging lanes at Darlington a few weeks ago people kept asking me what was wrong with the car. I would just put the clutch in and ask them, what noise? The other people with experience with this said it was normal too.

Stock GM oil was 5-30W (before being discontinued). Castrol TWS is heavier since it's 10-60W. WTH did you use that was heavier than that?
I read this all over the place, but I can't tell if the flywheel has caused more noise.
Bill installed my flywheel and clutch combo. The clutch is a sprung 6-puck with the stock (nothing else is even available) pressure plate. Carolina Clutch combo. Bill also swapped the oil out from the transmission at the same time. VERY smooth, no issues at all.
I think most people are hearing noise and vibration because the flywheel was not BALANCE MATCHED to the stock dual-mass. This service alone cost something like $200 dollars, although Bill insisted on it.
I do get some chatter in reverse, only because I am not modulating the throttle/clutch pedal very well.
the clutch is also super grippy, and takes getting use to.
A couple little things that will help. First use a sprung hub clutch disc. It helps alot. And if you raise the idle around 900 rpm, that will help with the gear rattle. With the cam in my car it idles around 1050-1100 rpm. I don't hear any gear rattle... but the car is kind of loud

Joe:
I was prepared for some added noise but was freaked out by how much it really is (not prepared for so much)! I might have stayed with the dual mass otherwise.
I really hope that the llightweight will provide an enormous seat of the pants difference. I'm comforted to see that this is pretty normal. Hope to see you soon.
Mark
On the street the difference is youll have to feather the throttle some and change your engagement routine a little the engine will want to bog quicker. Once in gear it may pull through a little easier.
Its all personal choice, some like everythign light imo a heavier flywheel is better for the avg street strip car.
ou can always get a billet one and have the best of both worlds you know.
Carolina Clutch should have them.
I wonder if people who do a complete engine build (instead of just replacing the flywheel) and have the rotating assembly balanced during the build have the same issue.

Yes and yes,,, I put the Blue Tag behind 2 or 3 fresh406 engine builds, same thing, it just is what it is
