Well, today I changed my oil, filter, plugs, wires, cap and rotor on my 85 Z51. The car runs and idles much better. No more stumble on acceleration and a much better idle at around 680-720. However, when I put in oil, it took 6qts and is still barely half way to the full mark...Is this normal?
I still have a fuel filter and Bosch III's to go on too!

Check dip stick tube to make sure its in it's proper place.
thats the best I can do really. I was laying on the drivers side of the car stiking my hand underneath with the camera so you can get a sense of perspective. The pan definitely dips down but Im not sure if thats stock or not.
hmmmmm..very interesting. For all I know it could be aftermarket. I mean the previous owner didnt even bother telling me it was a Z51 either. I didnt even realize it till I looked at the window sticker!
Don't forget to swap out your PCV valve, too. It's an important (but often neglected) tune-up item. Fuel filter, air filter, and O2 sensor wouldn't hurt, either.
Looks stock to me. Your stick must be incorrect. Next time you do an oil change, put 5 quarts in and re mark the stick. Is the tube pushed all the way in the block?
Check your dipstick. If it is anything like mine, it has the part you insert into the block and the other end. The part near the block has a reverse groove (Not sure what it is called) but you push it in till it hits the block.
that looks like a Milodon pan...holds 6 qts. I have the same one.
I wish we could tell for certain or change the pan out. I'd hate to tell him to go to 5 quarts and have it be wrong. Wish there was some way we could know. I thought Miloden pans were gold irridated? Is there a stamping there that will confirm it for sure?
