When I open the hood of my '88, I have to hold the release lever with one hand and fuss with the hood with the other. It seems like the hood is not aligning well with the Pins that hold it in place. It appears like there might be some adjustments down by the hinge points, but I wanted to ask for some advice before getting into that, and possibly making a bad situation worse!
I had this problem. Before you go and loosen a hood that's still aligned fine, grease the latch assembly and work it a few times with the hood cable. Mine wouldn't open unless someone was pushing on the passenger side and now it works PERFECT! Since last summer even. I'll bet that's all you need to do. BTW, I just used some spray lithium grease, talk about easy.
the male latch pin that is bolted to the hood often gets rusty on the 'squared' backside of the pin (opposite from front taper), as well as the backside of the moving shear plate in the female (cowl mounted part of latch)...these two areas are in contact when the hood is down/latched...a little dab of grease may suffice (pita to get the grease to where it needs to go)
to check hood male pin alignment with the cowl female, put a masking tape 'X' centered across the female aperture, apply a tiny dab of slow drying paint to the tip of the male pin, gently lower the hood until the male pin barely touches the 'X' and then raise the hood...the transferred paint on the 'X' should be centered... if not, loosen the three bolts that hold the male pin assy to the hood and move as req'd (holes in assy are oversized to allow adjustment)...may be helpful to put additional masking tape partially alongside the male assy before loosening the three mounting bolts to allow return to original location if reqd...masking tape does not adhere well to dirty surfaces, clean/degrease as reqd beforehand.
