Default Stock air intake systems?

Are there two different styles that come on the LT1 cars? Only reason I ask is that I looked in a magazine and the one that says it is the stock one for my car looks NOTHING like th eone that is in my car. Here is the one from the magazine.

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...8&dept_id=1756

But mine doesnt look like that. When I took it apart it has a square cut out maybe 3 inches wide by 5 inches tall. On the front section of the air intake there are these two pieces of plastic that go ALL the way across the intake and they are sort of "S" shaped on the ends to let air in.

Did they use two different styles in LT1 cars?

Thanks!

What year vette do you own?????

The one in your link looks like the one that came with my 95 and the one on my buddies 92 so I'd bet yours is either modded or aftermarket.

If you really want to identify what you have post a picture.

I have a 1994.

Here are some pics of it. Just took it off and put it back in.

Stock, aftermarket, or a different year perhaps?

Looks like someone's attempt at modifying the stock setup. The best modification for this vintage is the one I ended up putting on my 95. Basically, the housing is flipped 180-degrees so that the box pokes through a hole cut in the radiator shroud. This was offered for a few years through some of the aftermarket companies but the the guy that produced them apparently stopped producing them. Any solution that pulls air from outside INSTEAD OF the engine compartment has to be an improvement.

So....the lid looks dif. than what I see on other "stock" set-ups. What year lid would this have been?

I am thinking about getting a stock one and just cutting around the rolled part on the top so that the air inlet section is the entire filter and not just a 3 by 5 section.

Ideas? lol

There are aftermarket options that replace the metal housing with one that is fully cut out as you describe. But, again, if you are still sucking hot air from inside the engine compartment I doubt you will notice much improvement.

Granted you wont notice much improvement but a completely chocked up air box pulling is hot air would in theory be worse than a not-so-choked-up air box pulling in more hot air...lol

No one has answered my question. The top section of my box is NOTHING like what I see on stock units. it has ZERO louvers in it.

What are those cylindrical shaped things on the top of your air filter? My 96 looks like the one in the pic from ecklers that you have in your first post...

Hey Doug do you have pictures of your setup? I have an idea of cutting through the bottom of the air filter box and upper rad shroud then flipping the filter over and using the extra plastic I cut out and use rtv and seal up the top of the airbox. The biggest problem I can see is that the stock airfilter would no longer fit so I have been looking at finding a smaller rectangle filter with a lip approx the same depth. Kinda tough tho.

Is this somewhat similar to what you had?

That is the exact one that was on my 94 when I bought it. I removed the "tubes" on the outside and cut the rest of the lid out. Made a big difference

Hrm...I wonder why some people have our style and others have the style like in the Ecklers book.
