Default Running Hot need help?

Hi everyone. I just had a jasper engine put it 2 days ago. i got it back went on a 15 min drive in 65 degree weather and i was at 225 degrees and the coolant was like 230? almost everything under the car is new. i think they put a stock therostat in. If i change that will it make a diffrence?

It's probably got a stock thermo in it. You should drain the coolant and remove the thermostat to see what it is. If it's a 195 try a 180. Also check the front of your radiator for leaves and stuff that may have gotten caught up in there.

Change thermostats to either a 160 or 180, whichever you want. Clean the front of the radiator, if you had a chip burned for the new engine, id have it reburned to turn the fans on earlier

Don't know about the L98, but the LT1's are designed to run hot.
According to some experts, putting a lower T-stat won't do much good unless you do a lot of racing. If you are strictly street, leave the t-stat stock.

I don't know about the Lt1's but when an L98 gets that hot , with the stock 195, they run like s**t. I don't understand why an engineer would design an engine to run like s**t.

Did you check your coolant level, if it was just filled, might have some air in the system and need to be burped and more coolant added.

Coupling your other thread about white smoke with this one,
I'd say you have a bad head gasket. It would explain the white
smoke and super-heated coolant which may be spiking your
engine temp.

A lower thermostat won't change your operating temperature. It will just change the point where the t-stat begins openning and will slow the warm-up till it reach a point above the t-stat set temperature, then no difference.

You may need to clean your radiator, there are instructions in the tech tips area of the forum.

my 84 runs that hot at idle. the fan comes on at around 230F and stops at 219F or so. It runs about 190F going down the hiway @ 70mph. Oil usually gets to low 230's also.

I think you need a better chip! L98's are programmed to run at those tepm's. The main fan wont even turn on untill 230-240ish as I recall, and then it shuts off around 210 or so.
