I've got rattling or clanking from the front when I go over small bumps. Also when not moving, I hear a clunk from the front as I apply the brakes. Just bought the car and it was well kept and has newish tires. '90 convertible. Any thoughts? Car steers and stops fine.

You my friend need some anti-rattle clips for your brake pads (the pads are just moving around making some noise, no need to worry)... Then all your troubles should be fixed! I think you can pick them up at NAPA or Pepboys for like $20...

Does anyone have a pic or 2 where the clips go in the caliper?

best possible outcome is loose pads. i wonder if just changing out the pads will do the job. is it possible that the inboard pad's spring has rusted out and gone?

I'm not sure if the '90's have the same brakes as a '94. If they are, then the pads run directly in the caliper frames with no shims. We had a rattle going over bumps and it turned out that the caliper frames were worn and allowed the pads to rattle. The cure was "newer" frames that we got from a speciality Corvette salvage yard, as these are nw a discontinued part from GM.

you have to check all suspension parts and brakes, if you don't know how to do that go to mechanic for diagnosis.

No Problem! Changing the pads wont do much. You need to get the clips. They fit in between the caliper and pad. That should do the trick.
It sounds like the pads are slapping the rotor right? And when you drive it makes some noise but once you apply the brakes it slaps then no more noise?
