Default Timing problem on 88 L98

Ok guys after I broke my valve cover yesterday from the rockers I got a new one and installed it. Now I cant seem to get the timing right. If my #1 cylinder is in firing position it says to have rotor set between #1 and #8 on distributor cap. Every time I try it the rotor goes past it and when I do line it up between 1 and 8 the distributor wont drop all the way down. I tried every way but cant get it in. Little help would be great.

Thanks guys.

There is a drive that runs into the oil pump under the dizzy that needs to line up so the dizzy falls into place you need to move that back with a long screew driver so it falls into the right position. You can also set the dizzy in place then silghty lift as you turn the rotor clockwise you will feel it move 1 position at a time and reseat do this till you get the right position on # 1 cylinder. I hope this helps.
If you cant get it like that you can always realine the spark plug wires position on the cap. So if the dizzy seats into place under # 8 just rotate wires one position over on the cap and make that #1

with above. You should line up the timing mark on the balancer with the pointer. Be sure to pull #1 plug and as you turn the engine over by hand place a finger over the plug hole. You want to feel compression in #1 as you are lining up the timing mark. When this is finished, then check the rotor in the cap to see which wire it is pointing to. You can either move the wires on the cap....or pull the distributor and using a long screw driver and place it down the distributor hole and turn the oil pump shaft a little and try to drop in the distributor. If it still doesn't drop all the way, turn the oil pump shaft some more. Keep this up until the distributor drops into place.

Replace the plug in number #1 and snap on wire boot to plug. Hook up timing light. Disconnect the tan (single) wire and start the car....turn the distributor until the timing marks are where you want them. Then tighten down the hold down bolt....recheck timing to be sure that there has been no movement. Connect the tan wire. You would have throw a code 42 by doing the above. Disconnect the battery neg. terminal to clear the code. You should be up and running.
