Thanks for the quick reply. He did remove the pan and test the solenoid directly to confirm that it is not engaging.

got it....Maybe that is the issue....

As far as parts are concerned, call Orange County Transmission in Costa Mesa Ca and see if they have a part

Well, this story closes with the O/D still not working. I decided that the cost to repair that unit might be considerable, when I would prefer to replace the whole transmission with a new 6-speed unit instead. We'll have to wait for a windfall before I undertake that project! However, one question still remains. With the Overdrive switched off (no D on dashboard), I can down shift and feel the engine slowing down the car. With the Overdrive enabled (D on dashboard), I can downshift, but not feel the engine slowing me down. Any clues that explain this behavior would be appreciated!

To close this out...I took the car to a shop back in the late winter. The pulled the OD out and needed to replace some parts. S&k Speed came through with the parts. The car drives down the highway just great now.
