Hey guys. Still collecting parts for my 96 LT4 tune-up/restoration. It has been sitting for a few years and i rarely get a day off to work on it but last time i did, i changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, trany fluid, air filter and belt, upon closer inspection, it looks like my hoses have been ruined from that Dex-Cool sitting there so so i replaced the thermostat and ordered new hoses and flushed the sytem and will be putting green coolant in. The next day i get to work on it, I will be replacing all the hoses and the ball joints which i noticed were bad. I already ordered and recieved some MOOG ball joints so I think I have everything I need for the next time but I am already looking ahead to the project after that which will be the clutch job. Before she was parked to sit, I have noticed that the clutch is very worn and has trouble holding in some situations. This is completely understandable since this is the original clutch that came on my ZF equipped car and now has over 175,00 miles on it.
I am going with a OEM style clutch from Valeo because I work at Carquest and can get it for under 250 bucks with my discount. I was however thinking about going with a single mass flywheel. Mine obviously has the stock dual mass flywheel in there now and I was originally considering the Fidanza aluminum FW but I have done enough research that it has convinced me that this piece will make daily driving in stoplight traffic a little to difficult. Its not the advertised additional gear noise tha is driving me away. However, it is the fact that you have to rev the motor to more revs when accelerating from a stop light. My car has longtube headers, no cats, x pipe and no mufflers. Just tips. its not too loud idling or cruising but when you start winding up those RPMs, it really starts to scream. It is starting to sound like the aluminum flywheels are better for road racing but the single mass steel flywheel is better for street driving and drag racing.
any other problems that I should know about? which brand of steel flywheel should I go with? any pros or cons to some of the different steel models out there? any input is greatly appreciated.
Yes, I DID use the search feature and read through about any thread I could find on the subject. However, I did not see anyone that was going with a stock style clutch using any kind of single massflywheel. That is why I wanted to post this.
Fidanza makes a good FW too if you don't mind the aluminum FW noise you will get from the ZF; they also make a steel like the one mentioned above......the steel will not eliminate the noise entirely though like the OEM dual mass.....
