This must be my turn to have a bad month with my trusty 87. All my idle problems are solved. Received just the right help from the forum and I thank everyone for all the help.
Just today I went to park on a slight incline and the A/T will not engage the parking pawl/dog. The lever goes where it is supposed to but not park lock. In fact when the lever is pushed all the way forward to the park position it is still in reverse. Any ideas will help. I don't have factory manuals. I am hoping it is an external problem and not an internal tranny issue.
The shifter bracket attached to the transmission with the 17mm bolt has an adjustable stud that the cable attaches to. If your console reads park and the tranny is still in reverse, you will need to loosen the stud and slide it toward the front of the car. That will put the tranny in park.
I'm having this same exact problem right now. Any additional information that you guys know of would be helpful.
For me it started out that when i put it in park the car would still roll! I was like what the world
Then just the other day it has now gotten worse. When i put it in park the car goes into reverse! I have to put it in neutral, turn the car off, put it in "park" and then apply the ebrake to stop he car from rolling down a hill!
So there is a cable on the side of the transmission that can be adjusted to fix this?
Didn't work. and the bolt size you mentioned wasn't right either. It was a 15mm, maybe you were thinking of a different year. Anyway the arm that is on the transmission is non adjustable. The cable is adjustable but BARELY. You can slide it forward and back maybe a quarter of an inch. So it still wouldn't go into park but i was able to adjust it enough to stop it from going into reverse in park.

Same problem ... its the shift cable ... bought one from Advance AP ... As I recall it was a Dorman and cost around $30 ...............
Alrighty cool thanks. Glad they have one and i don't have to order from the dealer. I'll head down there this week and grab one and post up my results as well as some pics of the process of changing it out to help others in the future to do the job.
