My dumb butt neighbor is trying to tell me he used to drive his old 87 corvette around with no air filter and it ran better. Is this possible? If not i need some proof what it acutally does to the car without the filter more short term not long term thanks. I would love to prove this moron wrong
It will give you more air flow, which should increase hp. But a small piece of trash can ruin your Mass Air Sensor. Not to mention trash getting into the engine. Maybe making a valve stick open and causing some serious damage.
A lot of drag racers like to run without the filter while running down the track.
Short term it will improve performance. It will allow the engine to ingest more air. Short term being like 1/4 mile at a time.
Long term, you can wipe out rings, rods, pistons and bearings depending on how dirty the air that is being breathed. Other than that, it's a great idea.
Get a K&N Air Filter, it flows nice and it will protect your engine. I doubt you'll get any more performance running your car without an air filter. Get a good after market air filter along with a cold air intake system and I think your car won't know if you have the filter on or off.
You guys arent helping my case. Just say its a bad thing LOL
Does it not help even more that I also have an 87. :D Seriously though, I would absolutely never drive around town like that. I only do it at the track. There is way too much debris to hurt the car on the roads.

I run my LT1 Trans Am with no filter at the track and pick up a consistent 2 tenth gain over the stock paper filter. I brought both the paper and K&N filters to the track a couple times and test run both, along with no filter. I ran a tenth quicker with the K&N over paper, then a tenth quicker with no filter over the K&N.
It's worth it at the drag strip, but for normal driving, a tenth hardly matters.
