I bought a new gasket for the rear hatch. I see in Ecklers a rear window drain kit in their new catalog page23. Anyone ever use one? Is it worth it??
Yeah, I bought the kit, It was pretty cheap made and consists of some small brass drains and some cheesy tubing,(plastic) It does work and drains the water that always lays in the crevice of the window and the post, but I think its pretty pricey for what you get.
If you install the new seal properly you shouldn't need the drain kit, mine has the original seals and even when I blow dry it with the shop vac it doesn't leak. Just the thought of drilling those holes .... :U
I have had the drain kit in for 6 years. I works great. There are no cracks ( I just looked to make sure - you guys scare me sometimes). Because my car is constantly driven, and has been for the last 12 years. I really appreciate the work the drain does. I attribute the rear window seal from crackin/breaking in the corners due to the rain water that collected there. Now if it is to be a museum trailered classic - thats a different horse. IMHO ;)
I bought that kit because the puddle of water running out and down the fresh clean car ( black ) is very annoying. I have replaced the gasket, put it on properly and there still is space for water to accumulate. However the instruction is very vague about where to drill the holes exactly, so even though I don't worry about drilling the holes, I don't want to drill more than one set!!
Hey blue 1990, could you descibe exactly where you drilled them? Thanks...ps: mine is a daily driver.

Yep 8 years and 50K miles.. no cracks or leaks or anything.. they work GREAT
Worked great for me too. Put them in about 3 yrs ago and no problems, cracks etc. When I looked at the parts I new I had seen the brass insert before somewhere but could not place it. Then I was in a Home Depot and saw it. Its a part from a brass eyelet that you would us on a canvas tent etc. They have taken one of those and bent the edges to the contour of the car. For you guys who have them look next time your in there and you will see what I am talking about.
I installed the kit on my 96. Drilled the holes, ran the tubing up, and slid it over the little funnel. One of the hoses slipped off, and I was getting water into the car. If you just drill the holes (and don't put the drain tubes in), the same thing would happen. Anyway, no big deal. I put another hose on the funnel, and sealed it, so the water runs out the wheel well, not into the body.
My thoughts: why bother??? you CAN damage the body. IF the hose slips off, water will drain into the car. No SUBSTANTIAL benefit.
You can wipe the little puddle of water out with a towel, after you wash the car. If it rains on the car, who cares. If I had it to do again, I would not have installed the kit. Now I am stuck with it, unless I want to do body work and repaint.
as for GS#883.....i don't quite understand...you saying the kit worked fine...but because one of the tubes fell off you would not do it.?...huh.....i mean 2 seconds to reseal the tubes and you will be fine.....but thats just me.....i don't mind fixing something...as long as it works.....
It is not worth the risk. If the tubes come off, water goes into the car. For what??? You really don't need it. When washing the car, blow out the water, or towel it out.
What is done, is done; but I would not do it again.
A little hole cause a crack! What the f**k are you smokin? The kit works perfectly. Plus if you drill the holes right there is no way the water can get into the car, even if the tubes were to fall off, which will not happen. Don't be scared at some of these rediculous comments. You can install the kit and hit the brass fittings with some touch up paint and you won't even see them. If you ever want to remove the kit, just fill the holes with some epoxy and hit them with some touch up paint.
