You can still get r12 Freon at Napa, Pep Boys and most auto parts stores, but its getting pretty expensive @ about $35 - $40 a can (you will need 3 cans) and you have to have a license to purchase it. Do a search on r12 Freon and complete your research.

I don't think you can. I had called all those places where I live, and none can get R12. None of the AC shops can even get R12.

Well. I can't say for California, but its still available here in Charlotte, but its getting harder and harder to find. I bought fours cans from Napa just a couple of months ago. It was like getting a new passport to get them to finally turn it over. They just did not want to give it up. Moreover, most A/C shops here do not service it anymore. However, I found an A/C restoration shop that stills rebuilds, refurbishes and services r12 systems. You might try this venue.
I have been told that its readily available in Texas, especially along the border towns as Mexico has not stopped using & selling it.

I'd either get some R12 cheap from Craigslist, or just convert to R134.
Is there a way you can tell if the can actually has R12 in it, and how much is there?
Get your mobile (609) license here: www.epatest.com - and if you can't pass the test, don't think of touching your a/c. If you want you do other things (like your home unit - 608 Universal), you'll have to take a proctored exam but locations are easy enough to find.
I don't know of any shop in this area that doesn't have licensed techs and the shop needs a BAR license.
The last time I needed any R12 I bought it Autozone.
Readily available on EBAY - but at least stick with something that has "Dupont" on the can (and even the "legit" stuff in Mexico says that much). I needed a pound of R22 last year (for my home unit) and since I didn't want a 30 lb jug, I bought a 15 oz can from some Ebay vendor which was enough to put my super heat where I wanted it. They never did ask for my license - I simply ordered and it came by UPS a couple of days later. Sometimes you can find it at Ace Hardware, but that's getting off topic.
