OK i just got a steering column for my 87. the steering column missing a key. the person i got the steering column from could not get a key from the dealer ship since it was off a 87 as well.
he could not get a key at all with out going to lock smith since the title was not in his name he owns the car but he never had the title put in his name.
any how now how would i go a round this and be able to put my vat key in this new steering column with out a key. Can i just unscrew the Ignition screw in side the steering column?
Or can i trick the dealership take my title to a chevy dealer and claim i lost the key and just take them the hole steering column? and see if they can make a vat bypasskey just to trun the Ignition to get the Ignition out and put ether a new one in with my vat coded key?
Personally I'd take out the lock cylinder, get a new one w/ regular keys, and bypass VATS with a matched resistor.
Either way I think you'll have to guess & check from the list to get the correct resistor value. I think the list goes:
1=392 Ohms, 2=523, 3=681, 4=887, 5=1130, 6=1470, 7=1870, 8=2370, 9=3010, 10=3740, 11=4750, 12=6040, 13=7500, 14=9530, 15=11800.
This may be though.. hopefully someone more knowledgeable will reply.

The cheapest/easiest/best option would be to use the cars original lock cylinder and key. Are they still with the car?
First of all, the dealer cannot make you a key for an 87 because they (GM) destroy all code information on cars over 10 years old. The oldest car they will currently make a key for, the original lock, without anything to copy, would be a 2000.
Secondly, the coluum nor switch does not have anything to do with the chip (resistance value). The proper chip is determined by a little blach box in the dash wiring harness.
As stated above, the cheepest method would be to switch the ignition lock from your old column into the replacement column and use your old key. If your (like most) ignition lock is badly worn, you can buy a new lock at Autozone or O"Rilies, etc. The new lock comes with a brass key whick works the lock, but does not contain a chip. You would simply take the new brass key and your old key with the chip that woked, to a locksmith. Using your old key which did work with your car, he would find the proper new blank. He would then trace the cuts from the new brass key onto the new chipped key and presto, your good to go.

well the dealer ship where i live can cut keys i even told them my yr and they said yes they have the old school tools for that type of key.
and they will charge me 20 to 30 bucks to tell me what key number ill have to use. from my key all i have to do is take my title to them
to cute me a new key from my vin yes most dealer ships did a way with older stuff but this is family owned chevy dealer ship that even has parts for my car still lol they even have my ignition . why you do they you ask because some car still use this type of ignition .
well i do still have my old key and it works i drive with it still now .
so can i take out the ignition with out the key?
Yes, you can remove the old lock assembly without having the key.
I had to replace the lock assembly in my 84 because it came with no keys.
If you go to the link aboatguy gave you, you'll see that the person removing the lock has the key in the 'off' position,.. same as no key at all.
did your 84 have the vat system in it and if it did how did you get your car to start with out knowing the vat code for the key?
or dos the new lock assembly reset the vat code for my car?
from what i know you cant with out the right vat coded key?
You first need to confirm that the column you purchased is correct for your car! There should be a yellow/orange or maybe green label stuck to the column that has a 7 or 8 digit part number on it. Post that number and I can likely ID it for you! Is there a two wire connector at the base of the column from the lock cylinder?
If it's correct everything has been covered in the previous posts. If you have your original key with the VATS, you need to get the VATS read, buy a new lock cylinder and get a new correct VATS blank cut with the tumbler identification that matches the new cylinder!
It's pretty simple! If you think you'll screw up the removal of the cylinder from the used column carry it to a shop!!
You should have no trouble removing the cylinder without keys!
I am not sure what you are asking but I think you are saying you cannot get the lock cyl out becuase you do not have a key to turn it. If that is the case it is very simple I have to do it a lot. Just get to where you need to be as if you had a key then drill out the old lock cyl. start small and work your way up just use caution..
