Default clutch fluid & question

91L98 ZF; I'm assuming I can top off the reservoir with reg dot 3 brake fluid. Is that correct? And, as I was putting in the battery for this year I swear the clutch reservoir is empty. I remember the trans shifting a little harder prior to putting it away as I had to make sure the pedel was floorboarded, could have been then that the level was down. Can I just fill up the reservoir and be done or is trouble waiting like bleeding? It's been in storage for 18 months.............Thanks, Frank

Yes, you can use DOT 3 brake fluid, and if the slave cylinder is empty you might have to bleed. I would also check for leaks.

The system (other than the slave)....then system is self bleeding.

Top of the res and then go for a nice long drive making sure you get it up to operating temps....as you shift your pedal should come back.

if your slave has air (highly unlikely) then you'll have to bleed.

Thanks guys. I toped it off, removed the rubber high-hat from the cap, replaced the cap only. I then pushed the clutch pedal down 3 or 4 times. I had to remove some fluid when reassembling to make room for the high-hat but let's hope it's okay now and not purged by air. Though prior to adding fluid I could see into the master down through that little 5/16ths hole at the bottom of the master and it looked dry so I'm hoping. Boy, the remaining fluid in the master was sure black!
Again thanks for the advice. Frank
