Default 84 Clutch release problems

Over the last year or so my 84 4+3 has been increasingly hard to shift into reverse... grinding noises with the pedal to the floor. The last time i had it out, barely made it home. The clutch wasn't releasing enough; car was pulling at stop lights in 1st with pedal full to the floor. I got under and checked, no fluid leaking, but i did measure fork travel and got roughly .5". Service manual calls for .7" travel. I bought a new master and slave this past week.... just threw master in today. The old one had the eye in the pushrod completely ovalled out, and a little leakage on the back side. I figured great, that's it. I didn't install the slave b/c the hydraulic line mounting location was wrong (from advance), but probably not the problem, no leakage from that whatsoever. Anyway master is all in and bled, I had my Dad get in and put it in 1st, hold clutch down, car is still harder to push by hand than when trans is in neutral, so still not releasing enough. I measured fork travel again, no more than .5". I've been noticing a creaking sound lately, like a loud click. I thought it was the clutch pedal, however when i put my head in the footwell and pressed it, i realized the sound was from underneath. Upon reading SM more closely I noticed that one possible cause of non clutch release is fork off of ball stud. Also under noisy clutch, fork off of stud. My question is, (I'm done for the night, just planning next move) will the fork fit out through the hole in the bellhousing, or if not can i move it aside enough to remove and inspect the ball stud? I'm hoping not to have to drop the trans. thanks much.
